Dear MLS Families,
Sawubona! This Zulu greeting means “I see you.” The response is Ngikhona, which means “I am here.” I love the depth in this greeting and the grateful reply. Each day at Martin Luther School, whether in-person or virtually, we make sure our students are seen, heard, and known! Even amid the pain our country is experiencing in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and many others, I am sending this greeting, Sawubona, with the sincere hope that we may all see each other and be here for each other.
On the heels of finishing the last two months of the school year online rather than in person, I felt incredibly proud of our students, staff, and families for their tremendous commitment to learning during the pandemic. In many ways, the MLS community has been a model of online learning. Since mid-March, we have seen our students grow in reading, math, and tech skills. We spent time on our school’s strategic plan, with more than 50 participants, including students, staff, and parents. We developed our new Mission, Vision, and Values for our school. And despite the social distance, many of us grew closer as a tight-knit community, ready and willing to help in any way!
We were sad to say goodbye to our 8th graders in June from a distance. Even with the many creative ways we communicated our congratulations and best wishes, none of them were as meaningful as a hug, a high five, or an in-person smile! We are proud of them for all the ways they have grown academically, socially, and emotionally, will miss them, and wish each one our very best.
Our Extended School Year (ESY) programming is under way with almost 200 students participating in our online classes, which include a host of engaging activities, virtual field trips, and a special Game Lab to tap into our students’ passion! We are presently planning for the fall and considering various options to balance between providing the best educational experience possible for our students and safest environment for our whole community amidst the ongoing Covid pandemic.
